A Week in the ‘Peg’

A Week in the ‘Peg’

We arrived in Winnipeg after our 32 hour bus journey from Toronto, ready to explore Manitoba and were greeted with open arms. Becks and I both had long lost friends living here that somehow both happened to know each other (I’m not going to argue with the rumours that Winnipeg has only 2 degrees of separation). Nights were filled with patio’s and long catch ups and days were filled with sightseeing, eating and more catch ups. With insider knowledge we really fell in love with the city and just to prove it Becks wrote ‘How I Fell In Love With Winnipeg’. But unfortunately Winnipeg was never going to be all play, our main reason for coming all this way was to buy a car, register it and get our 100 Day Ultimate Canadian Road Trip underway – easier said the done, ha!

Not to bore you with all our car woes, I’ll keep this bit short and sweet. Our over the phone promise from Manitoban Public Insurance was this:  As a tourist we could indeed register a car for 3 months. But this was in fact dismissed once we actually went in to sign the papers. Dismayed, disenchanted and pretty pissed off, Becks and I were left with a car that we couldn’t register and the reality that this road trip may not even begin. Did I mention we arrived in Winnipeg with open arms?? Well that was an understatement. Britt, a girl I had met partying on a beach in Thailand 7 years prior swapped the deeds of our car to her name and is kindly letting us drive it.

Behind all the car dramas we not only spent time with old friends but also made some new ones. Jennifer from Parks Canada kindly took an afternoon off to hang out with us and guide us on our upcoming destinations, we had a glorious afternoon with fine coffee hey Jen 🙂 The youths at the Skateboard Park would nod in our direction when we cheered one of their stunts and Becky’s friend Keith took us on a wild adventure powering around his families farm on quad bikes. For Canada Day Winnipeg shrouded us in musical heaven, everything from ska bands to indie groups and even a symphony orchestra flared around the park grounds.

The last few days in Winnipeg were a blur as we filled our aptly named vehicle ‘Moose’ or be it ‘Britt’s Moose’ with camping gear and last minute preparations and said our goodbyes.

.

It feels good to be finally on the road, I feel as though we have really worked to be here. Our first destination in Riding Mountain National Park, a gigantic rise in the Manitoban prairies. But wait – there is one last twinge in the story. Just as we got on the road, the same lady we were dealing with from Manitoba’s Public Insurance called… just to let us know that after an investigation we were now allowed to get the 3 month vehicle registration. ARGHHHHHH!!!!
