Animistic Funeral in Boti Village

Animistic Funeral in Boti Village

In the heart of West Timor there is access to a village unlike any other in Indonesia. They are fully independent, completely isolated and habitually communicate with spirits. The animistic funeral ceremony adequately displays the animistic beliefs of Boti’s villagers. Within 24hours the deceased must be brought to the meeting house and wrapped in 200 home-made blankets. During ritualistic chanting the spirit of the body is released and this embodies one of the worshippers. Using the body as a medium the spirit vocalises the names of the seven people that will carry them to their burial site. They carry the body outside of Boti village to an unknown location, guided by the speaking spirit. Only once the body is laid upon the earth do the companions begin to dig a grave.
