Djupalonssandur Beach

Djupalonssandur Beach

Explore Iceland: Explore Djupalonssandur Beach

.

Djupalonssandur Beach is both unique and quite strange, a gnarly cove decorated with statues of twisted hardened lava. From the car park, a tidy pathway channels you past one of these tall towers of static rock and into the cove. One half is enclosed while the other opens out into a wide black-pebble bay. On windy days the waves barrel and throw themselves at the blackened shoreline or, if you’re extra lucky, you might spot the appearance of a seal or two. On your return you cannot fail to notice the glamorous Snaefellsjokull Glacier perching above and beyond the rugged lava field.

How to get to Djupalonssandur Beach

On the western fringes of Snaefellsnes Peninsular route 572 is a small lane heading west from route 574. After passing for 2km through a lava field  you’ll reach a toilet block and car park. One track leads to a picnic bench that overlooks  the bay while several others guide walks along or into it.
