Geysir and Strokkur

Geysir and Strokkur

Explore Iceland: explore Geysir and Strokkur

.

The Geysir and Strokkur geothermal area is a wonderland of gurgling multi-coloured pools, all thanks to the hot water that is constantly bubbling right beneath the surface. It’s a pleasant walk through the park (ruined only by a terrible coffee from the tourist information centre) past thrashing boiling water and turquoise blue steaming pools but there really is only one main reason to come here: Geysir and Strokkur Geysers. Geysir used to steal the show but after having slowed down its activity over the past decade Strokkur now takes centre stage. Erupting 20m into the air every few minutes Strokkur is a rather playful spectacle. A watched pot never boils- oh how true, you’ll be surprised at the excitement of yourself and others waiting in anticipation for Strokkur to blow its top. After a bit of patience an iridescent blue dome forms and explodes into the air, it is entertaining enough to have you wanting more.

How to Get to Geysir and Strokkur

It takes just under 1 1/2hours to drive the 110km from Reykjavik to Geysir. From the N1 head east on route 36, after passing Thingvellir National Park look out for a left hand turn on route 365 heading to Laugarvatn. At Laugarvatn keep your eyes peeled for route 17 which filters into route 35 and heads straight past the Geysir tourist office.

.

If coming from the south head north from the N1 on route 35 just west of Selfoss.

.

Follow route 35, at one point it takes a sharp right had turn, follow it. Less than a kilometre later you will arrive at the unmissable tourist office of Geysir. Continue for another 6km and you will reach Gulfoss Waterfall.
