Gullfoss

Explore Iceland: explore Gullfoss

Forming a crucial part of the ‘Golden Circle’ Gullfoss is a worthy detour from Reykjavik.

Iceland’s chaotic weather can occasionally, while you are trying to admire a destination, blow you out of the way and block your view. For us that destination was Gullfoss aka “Golden Falls.” The wind howled and the rain spat in our faces as we gazed at this majestic two-tier waterfall, first dropping ten metres and then thundering down another twenty. There are several view points with which you can watch the Hvita River merrily plummet to the ground before it continues to wind its way between the steep gorge that scars the ground for 2km.

How to get to Gullfoss Waterfall

It takes 1 1/2hours to drive the 115km from Reykjavik to Gullfoss Waterfall. From the N1 head east on route 36, after passing Thingvellir National Park look out for a left hand turn on route 365 heading to Laugarvatn. At Laugarvatn keep your eyes peeled for route 17 which filters into route 35 which heads straight past the Geysir and Strokkur tourist office and onto the Gullfoss car park. This sight is usually included in any day trip exploring the ‘Golden Circle.’
