Hallmundarhraun Lava Field

Hallmundarhraun Lava Field

Explore Iceland: Explore Hallmundarhraun

.

The Hallmundarhraun lava field in Iceland’s west provides a peaceful, scenic drive that should not be missed. Stretching over 50km, this fossilised lava has remained steadfast since 930AD when it was expelled in an enormous eruption from a nearby volcano. Nowadays, the hardened lava is covered in a vibrant green moss only showing glimpses of a violent history by the jagged cracks veining through it. Several caves are found in this field including Iceland’s longest cave Surtshellir, but cannot be visited without a 4WD and also the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls.

  • […] Djupalonssandur Beach is both unique and quite strange, a gnarly cove decorated with statues of twisted hardened lava. From the car park, a tidy pathway channels you past one of these tall towers of static rock and into the cove. One half is enclosed while the other opens out into a wide black-pebble bay. On windy days the waves barrel and throw themselves at the blackened shoreline or, if you’re extra lucky, you might spot the appearance of a seal or two. On your return you cannot fail to notice the glamorous Snaefellsjokull Glacier perching above and beyond the rugged lava field. […]
