8 Reasons Why You Should Explore Iceland By Camper Van

8 Reasons Why You Should Explore Iceland By Camper Van

Iceland is a country on most travellers bucket list, with justifiable reason. With such magnificent diversity of raw, untouched nature we just couldn’t wait to get there and see it for ourselves.

.

While tying to digest the numerous tours and options available, we came across Iceland Travel who promoted the use of camper vans. This was something we hadn’t seen anywhere else, a game changer if you will. The idea of having unlimited access to the country, without constraints ultimately led to one final conclusion, we would circumnavigate the country independently.

.

Two weeks and two and half thousand kilometres later, we have come to realise that hiring a camper van is not only the cheapest way to explore Iceland but the ONLY way to explore Iceland.

8 Reasons Why You Should Explore Iceland By Camper Van

1. Have the freedom to SEE Iceland.

It’s not always about the destination but the journey. With your own transport you can stop alongside Icelandic horses, a beach or unmarked waterfalls. Indulge in anything that captivates you because with a camper van you are in control of time, your schedule, your ‘to-do list’ and that is pure freedom.

.

2. Increase chances of seeing Northern Lights.

Check the weather and an Aurora prediction and drive to the best destination for viewing NL. Stay an hour or make camp for the night, perusing the sky at regular intervals without needing to change out of your pyjamas. Oh, and when you do spot them, chase them for as long as you want.

.

3. Combine accommodation and transport costs to save money.

Paying for these two expenses as a package is far cheaper than booking a private room and hiring your own car/taking tours. With ample linen, a double bed and a stand-alone internal heating system, camper vans are comfortable even during the cold winter nights.

.

4. Spend less on food.

We are all aware that Icelandic grub is yummy but eating out in Europe is always going to increase your expenses. Camper vans come equipped with a stove, kettle and kitchen utensils. Not only is cooking a cost saver, but for all you romantics out there, dinner under an Icelandic sky, surrounded by wilderness is idyllic.

.

5. Wake up to nature.

The thrill of opening your door in the morning to Iceland’s profound landscape (coffee in tow) was our favourite thing about hiring a camper van. Whether it be a cascading waterfall, cliffside lookout or a string of volcanoes on the horizon, there’s no better way to start the day.

.

6. Indulge in ‘forced pampering.’

Make the most of shower facilities at the geothermic spas littered about the country. These are worth visiting for the experience never mind the freebie refreshment! It’s well known that a spa to an Icelander is what a pub is to an Englishmen, so not only are you enjoying a hot bath, a sauna and a good clean, you are actively engaging in Icelandic culture.

.

7. Make the weather work for you.

Iceland is renown for it’s dramatic and fluctuating weather patterns. Bad spells can make an attraction difficult to enjoy but with a camper van you can make the decision to hide until the storm passes, brave the rain or just drive on.

.

8. Make your own adventure.

With a home-on-wheels you are not constrained by anything. Go where you want, when you want and stay as long as you want.
