It is a question I was asked several times while in the city and on many occasions since leaving. I am always stumped how to answer. I mean, for sure Saint Marcos Square and the lovers archway of Rialto Bridge are wondrous sights but somehow neither of these spring to mind. Instead I am bombarded with a medley of images that have no names and I could not possibly create directions for. So instead of giving a plausible answer, I find myself stuttering about an art gallery whose name I can’t remember.
I suppose the truth is, venturing into the maze of Venice’s streets and finding the unknown is the absolute key to falling in love with it. Hearing your footsteps echo in unmarked squares, squeezing through alleyways crumbling into ruin and oozing with authenticity might be a far cry from the grandeur of the grand canal and have no name but will stay with you long after you leave.
Rather than a list of words here is my answer to why I love Venice in a few simple pictures, I hope I can encourage you to visit and get yourself thoroughly lost.
